With the outbreak of World War 2 the Reichsluftfahrtministerium ( Reich’s Air Ministry) recognized the need for an efficient observer watch (Beobachtungsuhr or B-Uhr) to be used by the aircraft navigator, assisting crews of long range bombing missions. Observer Watches were also worn by the Pilots who needed wrist watches that could be accurately and instantly read when both hands were used to pilot the aircraft. This design was given the Reichsluftfahrtministerium classification number FL 23883. This number appeared on all Luftwaffe Watches of this design. Printed on the inside of the case is the type, device and movement number, stock number and the finisher’s name.
The Luftwaffe commissioned five companies to build watches for its pilots and navigators: IWC, Laco, Stowa, Wempe and A. Lange & Söhne. All of the watches were built to the same specification – a 55mm case, hand-wound movement with centre seconds, an oversized crown for easy winding while wearing gloves, an extra-long riveted leather strap for wearing over a flight jacket and distinctive, legible dial markings. There were two dial variations of the B-Uhr: the Type A dial had a more standard outer minute track and a large triangle at 12 o’clock. The Type B dial had an inner hour track and a prominently demarcated outer minute track. The Lange you see pictured here is a very rare and original Type A .
The condition of this Lange B-Uhr is exceptional.
There are no dents/damage to the case and the crown is original
The dial is Outstanding and completely original.
This observer watch has its original, long, brown leather straps. They are another, signature characteristics of these Navigator's watches as a pilot would need to be able to adjust the straps around the jacket, requiring unusually long straps
Lange farmed out the final assembly and regulation of their B-Uhr’s to various companies like Felsing/Berlin, Fischer und Trabant/Pforzheim. This example has the case back signed Felsing Berlin
