Heuer Monaco 1133B

It is extensively reported that the Heuer Monaco 1133B was immortalized by the fact that Steve McQueen wore the watch during the making of the film Le Mans. What’s less well known is that the selection of that piece was made entirely by Mr McQueen and the choice was made from a selection of offerings including pieces from Rolex ,Omega ,Tissot and Bulova, Heuer’s selection included three other chronographs including the Autavia 1163 which at the time was readily associated with Motor sport .Its told that originally he selected an Omega to use but the prop master ,Donald Nunley, pointed out that his overalls had Heuer advertising on them and it would have been unlikely his character in the film would have worn an Omega and that is how history is made ! he then chose the Monaco 1133B as shown here.

The Monaco was first introduced in 1969 although a few subtle changes led to the 1133B being introduced in 1970 and everything about this watch shouts innovation, the movement was produced in collaboration with Brietling, Dubois ,Hamilton and Buren while they were attempting to produce the world’s first automatic chronograph in 1969 ,who won that battle depends on which articles you read but it was a very close call. The 39mm x 39mm case was again unlike anything around at the time and is still a very commanding timepiece to wear.

This example from the early 1970’s is fully serviced and in outstanding condition and comes fitted to a high-quality leather rally strap finished with Heuer buckle.
