It is a well-documented fact that the Omega Speedmaster ref 2998-61 was the very first watch worn in space, Wally Schirra in October 1962 has that honour and in my opinion this is the best looking Speedmaster produced, the combination of original Alpha hour and minute hands and drop counter weight chrono hand complement each other superbly.
The serial number on this stunning example dates it to December 1962 around the time of Mr Schirras great adventure it also makes it a whole year older than me and I know what has aged best !
The dial on this stunning watch from is beautiful and the stainless-steel case retains it great shape although at some point in the last nearly 60 years I am sure it will have had some light polishing.
The cal 321 movement is in the correct 18 million range for this watch and dates the piece to exactly the right age and performs superbly having just been serviced by STS in the Uk
This great watch is further enhanced by the fact its fitted to a very hard to find and in equally great condition 7912 bracelet with original no 6 end links these would sell separately for at least £3000 which is why many pieces are missing these and the DON bezel.
This excellent piece is also accompanied with the Omega extract from the archive document confirming it as correct serial numbers and date of production as the 6th December 1962
I have added a high quality hand made Italian leather strap as well for variety.
This is possibly one of the nicest 2998 ‘s available anywhere in the world today
