The first Explorer ref 1016 was released in 1963, the same year as yours truly was born! unlike me the 1016 remained relatively unchanged until production ended in 1989, the longest production run of any sports Rolex. It remains a true classic and one that should have a place in every Rolex collection.
The dial on the Explorer is for most instantly recognizable and in fact its simplistic design is actually a bi product of the purpose the watch was designed for, the early explorers who owned these watches needed a watch that was easy to read in poor conditions hence the large about of lume at the 3,6and nine markers and eventually the big Mercedes hands.
The 1016 wears very well and it sometimes makes a nice change from its weightier big brothers, the submariner and Sea-Dwellers although considering its renowned history such as being involved in the famous Mount Everest expedition in 1953, The explorer has always remained very good value when compared to other sports Rolex watches
This example dates to c 1973 and is in excellent condition, the 36mm stainless steel case shows no signs of over polishing and the dial is stunning. The watch comes fitted to a new very high-quality brown alligator strap which works very well with it.
The automatic cal 1570 movement is recently serviced, keeps great time and is guaranteed for 12 months.
