The Omega Speedmaster Speedsonic was introduced in the early 1970’s by Omega and hailed as the first electronic (not to be confused with quartz) chronograph chronometer. The watch was a revolution in watch making and very much led a new era in chronograph development and design. These watches (unbeknown to many) were also used to NASA under the Alaska project and a number of them were tested, including on shuttle missions.
Not only was the Speedsonic a move away for Omega in terms of the technology used but also in regard to the design, it was very cutting edge using a large ,43mm mono block stainless steel case with the versatility of the moon watch (including almost unbreakable hesalite crystal).
These watches are becoming rare now, primarily because there were very few made when compared to the moon watch but also because they were designed to be tool watches and as such used and abused.
This is an absolutely lovely example of an Omega Speedsonic. Probably one of the rarest of Omega chronographs and rarest Speedmaster models. The condition of this example will be hard to beat, the case could easily be called new old stock but for me the star is the slate grey dial which reflects the light to create amazing patters and also works as a perfect back drop for the creamy tritium lume hour markers. The watch comes fitted to a new Omega leather strap finished with vintage Omega steel buckle.
The Speedsonic was an adaptation of Omegas Mosaba movement or as we know it the F300, a mechanical movement which ran on a battery and was controlled by tuning forks which vibrated at a frequency of 300Hz. The movement was made under licence by Bulova, the chronograph version then adapted with basically and extra ‘layer’ for the chronograph operation. The movement in this watch was known as the Mosaba meaning ‘montre sans balancier’ translates for ‘watch with no balance’
There were only 10000 9210’s made in total production so when compared to the famous moon watch this is an extremely rare beat. When new these where flagship chronographs, costing 1/3rd more than the range topping flightmaster
This watch represents a true milestone in both watch making and Omega’s history, it was the first Chronometer Chronograph produced by the company and the world’s first electronic chronograph. Tested and passed by NASA there can be no better endorsement than that, this is one cool watch.
