Omega Mega Quartz Sold

The word rare watch is bounded around too often nowadays but on this occasion we are supremely confident in our appraisal that this is not only a very rare watch but and extremely important one. It is one of only a handful of solid 18 K gold examples of Omega’s famous Megaquartz 2400 series of watches, their most accurate watch ever made and to this day one of the only wrist watches to be officially certified as a Marine Chronometer.

The watches were developed in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s at a cost of 30,000,000 Swiss francs. Omega were determined to break the mold of watch making and this watch is how they achieved it. Most modern chronometer watches are at very best accurate to one second per day, this is accurate to one second per month

This watch is a calibre 1510, released in circa 1973/4, the watch came in a very similar case to the famous Marine Chronometer but without the plaque and 14 K bezel, available in Stainless Steel or 18 carat gold and with basically the same movement!

The Calibre 1510 was most famously produced with an aventurine crystal dial, nicknamed the ‘Stardust’. The watch came in a number of variations of dials: stardust (silver and gold), waffle dial in black, blue and brown and electric blue dial, by far the rarest of the production models was the 18 K stardust, which was completely hand made, including the cases which were produced in Fontana Italy and only 200 were ever made. The dials are all hand made and took days to complete each dial, the electric blue paint in impregnated with aventurine crystal and sparkles in natural or synthetic light, no two dials are the same.

The total production run of calibre 1510 was also 1000 units, around 800 of which were produced in stainless steel with a variety of dials and 200 were produced in solid 18 carat gold (weighing over 200 grams on bracelet) with either stardust or electric blue dials.

The original list price in 1974 for a calibre 1510 was £604 in stainless steel and £3275 in 18 carat gold, by contract the Moonwatch was £134!

We were very lucky to buy this watch from Tom Dick, the worlds leading authority on these remarkable watches. The watch is from his personal collection and as such is in collectors condition, especially considering there a probably no more than 50 of the watches remaining world wide.

The dial is stunning and most importantly 100% crack free, the movement is recently serviced and has just had a battery change at Omega UK. It has been fully refinished at Omega UK including new crystal, pushers, crown and seals. These are very rare watches to start out with but in 18K gold with  flawless dial it makes it very special.

Parts are readily available for these watches through Swiss Time Services in the UK  so you don't need to worry about the watch outlasting all of us!

All that said the new owner will have complete peace of mind knowing the beauty is ready to go with a new battery and will not require work for years to come, this genuinely is one of the rarest and most remarkable Omegas ever made and a true statement piece in any collection.
