Omega Speedsonic ‘NASA’ Star / Radial prototype SOLD

I am delighted to offer you this stunning piece which comes direct from the private collection of one of the UKs most respected vintage Omega experts and a close personal friend of mine.

This example is without a shadow of a doubt the most significant of the Speedsonic series, in 1975/6 NASA commissioned Omega to produce a series of watches to trial, these include a small number of Speedsonic watches, one of which has recently sold at Phillips auctions for tens of thousands of pounds.

The NASA Alaska IV watches were set apart from standard speedsonics in that the cases where made by the STAR watch company in the USA (as a result of the NASA requirement for signicanty USA manufacture of any components) they also had ‘radial’ dails.

This example is one of those watches, the watch is in simply stunning condition, showing very little sign of age. It was purchased from a Florida estate. The watch doesn’t have a serial number.

STAR only made 75 cases so to find one with the original radial NASA prototype dial is simply unheard of. The only other example known for sale in the last decade in this configuration sold for a considerable sum of money through a top end auction house earlier in 2018, the only other example, which came with NASA extract sold for tens of thousands.

Whilst ultimately the NASA/ Radial dial Speedsonic wasn’t adopted by NASA (they kept the famous moon watch) it is a significant part of Omegas watch making history, and this is one of only three known examples to exist and one of only two in this dial configuration.

With Speedmaster values rising at an astronomical rate this watch is not only a sure investment but also one of the rarest Speedmaster you will ever own, the black matt radial dial is simply a thing of beauty and married to the original star case and original movement means it really is a unique piece.

The Omega Speedmaster/ Speedsonic is one of the most significant Omegas of the later part of the 20th century. It was not only the companies first electronic (not to be confused with quartz) but was also the word first electronic Chronograph Chronometer. The Speedsonic was Omegas flagship chronograph at the time, far more expensive than the traditional moon watch, which was reflected in the quality of its manufacture, it really is a remarkable watch.
