It’s fair to say that any vintage timepiece from the late 1950’s manufactured for only two years will be fairly rare however I think that with the Omega CK 2990 the reason for the rarity makes a great story and the stunning looks of this hard to find all original piece mark this out as a bit of a sleeper to me.
In 1957 Omega released the Trinity of the Speedmaster, Seamaster and Railmaster all of which went onto great success for varying reasons, Enjoying this success the designers at Omega followed quickly the following year with the Ranchero which its plain to see borrowed many of the trinity’s features such as the instantly recognizable broad arrow hands and the Arabic numerals at 3.9 and 12 along with triangular hour markers .
The 36 mm stainless steel case size allowed Omega to make the price point of this piece very attractive whilst maintaining quality and reliability, the hand winding cal 267 movement was already famed for these qualities.
So far so good! then came the choice of name, whose decision that was is probably lost but this great, versatile and affordable watch was named the Ranchero which attributed to its spectacular failure as translated Ranchero in all the Spanish speaking world means “ranch hand “sadly not a very well regarded career and so very quickly the watch was discontinued.
This example is one of the few left with completely original unrestored dial and has aged superbly
