Rolex GMT Master 6542 Bakelite
Introduced in 1954, the ref. 6542 initially aimed at Pam Am pilots was an immediate success, ranking alongside the recently introduced Submariner in its popularity and advancing Rolex’s reputation as manufacturers of the ultimate tool watches. Like the early submariner the 6542 case has no crown guards
Although the GMT has been with us for decades the 6542 was only manufactured for a relatively short period and so any piece is scarce add to that fact that even fewer were made in solid 18ct gold and fewer still retain the fragile Bakelite bezel then what I am please to be able to offer you is a truly rare piece and one that to many Rolex collectors is regarded as a Grail watch.
The condition of this watch is amazing, the case shows little sign of over polishing and the original nipple dial is outstanding.
The watch is fitted top a full size Rolex jubilee bracelet which although dated to 1965 we believe to be original to the watch, As in this era it was not unusual to see a watch for sale in a retailers for a number of years before sale ,Sadly a previous owner has some initials attached to the clasp ,we can have these removed should you wish however I always like a client to see a watch as it arrives to me .
