This is a very rare Vetta ‘cronografo’ made for the Italian market by the Wyler watch company. The Vetta brand is extremely collectible across the world, a renowned Swiss company and highly collectible. Without exception their most coveted watches are the range of Valjoux 22 ‘waterproof’ chronographs, some in ermetico watertight cases and some in ’Spillman’ waterproof cases, not equally as collectible and both very rare in any condition, especially this completely original and unrestored condition.
The watch boasts its original three colour dial, which is in untouched condition, with beautiful gold gilt detailing, it really is remarkable and testament to the quality of these pieces. The Valjoux 22 movement is again completely original, The Valjoux 22 is a high grade 18,000 per hour with 42 hours reserve and was so successful it ran from 1914 to 1974, and is very highly regarded by all collectors.
The case is a ’Spillman’ made stainless steel waterproof example, it shows very little wear an appears not to have been polished. These ’Spillman’ made cases really are the ‘cream of the crop’ of period chronograph cases, the screw back and large ‘waterproof pusher really do make this stand out, as does the size, at 37mm without the crown.
The watches dates to the mid 1940’s, it was bought from the original owner who picked it up at the end of WW2 and took it back to Australia. A remarkable piece with remarkable history.
This is a very special watch and is very rare, in this condition almost impossible to find.
