About this watch

The reference 16800 was introduced in 1979 bringing with a raft of improvements such as Sapphire crystal new improved cal 3035 with quickset date and improved depth rating from 200m to 300m,whilst early examples used the familiar matt dials and circular painted hour markers seen on the preceding ref 1680 later examples such as this piece from 1984 saw the introduction of the now familiar  gloss dial dial and white gold surrounds to the hour markers ,These early gloss dials are often seen with defects in the paint finish leading to either a spidering effect on the lacquer finish or as in this case where the dial takes on a matt appearance which when combined with the white gold hour markers filled with tritium lume which has aged to a wonderful warm coffee cream colour over time is highly prized by collectors seeking a unique looking vintage sub and Just as you think it cant get any better the icing on the cake for this piece is the dual signed dial by Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & co were among a select band of prestigious retailers that had there own names on  the dials of the Rolex watches they retailed ,a practice that actually lasted for a number of decades until the 1990's ,some of these dials were stamped by Tiffany and co themselves ,some actually hand pained and some were done by Rolex themselves until Rolex eventually stamped it out and as a result ended the relationship with Tiffany.

The 40mm stainless steel case is nice and sharp and not been badly polished in the past. The correct and full-size stainless-steel bracelet ref 93150 is in equally good condition.

As previously mentioned the serial number dates this excellent collectible Submariner to 1984 so anyone looking for the way to celebrate their 40th year would be hard pressed to find a better way of doing so.
