Known to English speaking collectors as bubble backs or Italians as ovetto these highly collectible vintage Rolex pieces were first introduced around 1931 when Rolex first introduced the self-winding movement with full rotor and Rolex case makers had to accommodate the extra movement thickness whilst also maintaining the previous significant breakthrough of a waterproof case hence the Oyster case with perpetual movement became names for ever associated with the Rolex brand.
This beautiful example ref 5050 dates to the 1940’s and the 32mm oyster case is made entirely from solid 14ct gold and as you can see it has survived the last 75 years in remarkable condition.
The cream dial has aged uniquely showing just the right amount of patination and fitted with the original Alpha handset with blued straight seconds hand The dial is finished with applied gold Arabic numerals.
The watch runs on the Rolex, self-winding movement which is signed: ‘ROLEX PERPETUAL CHRONOMETER SWISS MADE PATENTED’ on the winding rotor, and on the surface of the movement cap: ‘TRIGGER SCREW VIS TIRETTE PATENTED’.
I believe this lovely solid gold bubble back to be priced very sensibly and I am sure the new owner will be delighted by it.
